Iran's Mount Damavand, the highest point in the Middle East has been designated as the country's first National Natural Heritage Site.At an elevation of 5,628m (18,406ft), Mount Damavand is Iran's highest peak. It is a dormant volcano, which was active in the Quaternary Period.Located in the middle Alborz Range near the coast of the Caspian Sea, it is the highest peak in the Middle East and the tallest volcano in all of Asia.

The Damavand peak is shrouded in snow throughout the year. The most important thermal springs on its slopes are Ab Ask and Larijan.Damavand is the symbol of Iranian resistance against foreign domination in Persian poetry and literature, with numerous references in the country's most important epic work, Ferdowsi's The Book of Kings, as well as being eulogized in many other literary and mythological contexts as the symbol representing the national pride and independence of the Iranian nation.

Iran's Mount Damavand was submitted to UNESCO's tentative list for registration as the country's first Natural World Heritage Site.Iran Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHTO) believes the world registration of Damavand will help protect the diverse flora and endemic species as well as the endangered plants growing around it gorgeous slopes.

Mount Damavand will be registered on the national heritage list as the first natural monument across the country on July 29.
Mount Damavand is a dormant volcano and the highest peak in Iran with a special place in the Persian mythology and folklore.
Located in the middle of Alborz range of mountains, it is the highest point in the Middle East and the highest volcano in Asia.
Though not volcanically active, there are fumaroles near the summit crater that deposit sulfur, which were most recently known to be active since July 6, 2007.IRNA

Description
Mount Damavand is the highest elevation about 5628m a. l. s. in Iran. It is an inactive volcanic mountain which was activated in Quaternary Period. It has numerous thermal springs. The peak of Damavand covers permanently snow during the entire year. The most important thermal springs are Ask and Larijan. The Flora and Fauna is very rich and include about 2000 plant species. There are numerous endemic species which are important to Flora of world.
Justification of Outstanding Universal Value
VII. This volcanic mountain activated in Quaternary Period and it is the one of the highest elevations in the world.
VIII. The presence of several thermal springs and rich Flora and various plant communities.
IX. It is an inactive Vulcan with beautiful landscapes specially in spring due to distinct species such as Tulipa, Iris and etc.
X. Due to presence of endemic species and beautiful landscape, it should be protected.
