Generally speaking Damavand has only two seasons, summer and winter! The two other seasons are too short and negligible. It is essential to be aware of Damavand climate and weather warning before you attempt this giant volcano. For a successful climb in any season you need fine condition as far as weather is concerned, it is recommended to reserve an extra day in your itinerary for bad weather.

Spring

Climbing to the Damavand summit in spring could be tough because of the soft snow covering the footpaths and also the weather changes very quickly in this season. But the mountain lower slops are beautiful, specially for its attractive natural poppy fields which starts blooming in May in lower parts and gradually covers the upper parts. May and June are suggested for hiking and trekking programmes to nature and ecological system of the mountain.

Damavand in Spring

June, July, August
Damavand mountain is a popular peak for summer, June, July and August are the recommended months for hiking trekking, climbing, Alpine style mountaineering and mountain biking. Footpaths are usually free of snow in this season and reaching the base camp is done without difficulty by public transportation. Generally the weather is fine, but it could change to bad rapidly and the temperatures may drop to sub zero fast, so be aware to have sufficient cloths even during a good weather. Summer is the best timing for regular mountaineers to tackle this giant volcano. The disadvantage of this timing is the crowded shelters.

Generally speaking the weather is cold and windy in fall, icy footpath makes ascend and descend difficult.
But you may consider climbing expeditions in September if the weather is not so bad, winter equipment is essential. Shelters are not crowded. Because of freezing temperature, there is no running water in the area and for drinking water you have to melt ice.

Damavand winter condition may start from October and last to April, there are harsh weather and heavy snow falls in this period because the mountain is closed to the Caspian Sea. In winter season ascending to the summit is very difficult and some times impossible. The wind speed may reach up to 100 Km/h and the temperature may fall down to -70 deg C. December to mid May is ideal for custom ski vacation tour and snowboard tour packages.

Winter Recommendations:
A successful climb to Damavand summit in winter is possible only in some circumstances Yyou need:
- Good mountaineering experience, recommended up to 7000 meters.
- Good equipments and gears.
- Very good timing and weather condition.
- Very experienced guide for climbing ski touring.

Winter tips and tricks
- use south route only either for climbing or ski mountaineering.
- The gravel road to the base camp is closed due to snow and ice, so cars can not go up to this campsite.
- It is impossible to use the mules, so you should carry your stuff by yourself or by porters.
- Shelters need cleaning from garbage and snow, if you could find them under snow!

Warning
The bad weather has caused more casualty than any other factors. Remember weather forecast is only an approximation, so do not rely on these reports totally. The weather condition on Mt Damavand could change to disastrous very quickly in winter, strong winds more than 100km/h and freezing temp below -60°C, you should be very experienced for a difficult ascend or ski expedition in the difficult climates and be aware that there is no rescue team and medical facilities in the area in case of injury and emergency, so extra care in necessary in winter and any consequences is at your own risk.

Mythology of Mt Damavand
Tirgan feast is the day that heroic Iranian archer Arash put his life on an arrow and threw it by a bow from the top of Iran's highest peak Damavand to demarcate Iran's border with Turan.
(Archer and archery may come from Iranian hero name Arash).

Bows played a very important role in Iranian military history. In our history, all Achaemenian kings had pride in their bows and skills in archery. The legend “Arash Kamangir” describes that the borders of Iran were determined by the archer Arash who put all his force in drawing a powerful bow to the extent that all his life energy transferred to the arrow, a shot which flew for a very long distance. The legend describes that Arash died immediately after shooting that arrow. Many Iranian children read this story and are sad about the tragic end of it and are proud of the heroic act of Arash Kamangir.

Âraŝ, the Archer (Persian: آرش کمانگیر Āraš-e Kamāngīr) is a heroic archer of the Persian mythology. Being celebrated by poets such as Ferdowsi, the name Arash is one of the most popular in the Persian-speaking world.
At the end of war between Iran and Turan, Turan had advanced close to the Damavand mountain area. Damavand in Iranian mythology is the very heart and centre of the Middle Clime where Iranian people reside. This Middle Clime or Iran Zamin, incorporating far larger area than present Iran, was reputed to have the best soil, most moderate weather and the greatest of peoples. However to the east of the Iranian plateau lay the vast expanses of the wintry Southern Siberia where the nomadic and covetous Turanians lived and the story of early Iranian civilizations is that of survival against Turan.The humiliation of conquest was to be complete with a Turanian proposal to limit Iran to the radius of an arrow's flight from the umbilical Damavand. Iranians were to shoot an arrow towards Turan and wherever the arrow landed, the new border between Iran and Turan would be drawn. Âraŝ, an old man, volunteered to shoot the arrow. On the bright morning of Tirgan, Âraŝ took off his shirt, faced north, strained his bow as never before, let the arrow fly and, exhausted, became one with the arrow and disappeared. The arrow flew the entire morning and fell at noon on the far bank of the Oxus River in what is now Central Asia. The Oxus river is the traditional boundary between the Iranian world and outer central Asia or Turan. Âraŝ's body was never found. There are still stories from travelers who, lost in the mountains, hear Arash Kamangir's voice who helps them find their way and thus saves their lives.

History of Iran
The region now called Iran was occupied by the Medes and the Persians in the 1500s B.C., until the Persian king Cyrus the Great overthrew the Medes and became ruler of the Achaemenid (Persian) Empire, which reached from the Indus to the Nile at its zenith in 525 B.C. Persia fell to Alexander in 331–330 B.C. and a succession of other rulers: the Seleucids (312–302 B.C.), the Greek-speaking Parthians (247 B.C.–A.D. 226), the Sasanians (224–c. 640), and the Arab Muslims (in 641). By the mid-800s Persia had become an international scientific and cultural center. In the 12th century it was invaded by the Mongols. The Safavid dynasty (1501–1722), under whom the dominant religion became Shiite Islam, followed, and was then replaced by the Qajar dynasty (1794–1925).

During the Qajar dynasty, the Russians and the British fought for economic control of the area, and during World War I, Iran's neutrality did not stop it from becoming a battlefield for Russian and British troops. A coup in 1921 brought Reza Kahn to power. In 1925, he became shah and changed his name to Reza Shah Pahlavi. He subsequently did much to modernize the country and abolished all foreign extraterritorial rights.

Fuji or Damavand this is the question ?!
You may have seen this nice picture on internet before, some Iranian believe this image belongs to Damavand Mountain in Iran! But a lake and a town at the lower part of the photo indicates that it is not true because there is no such a big town near Damavand, and this pic belongs to the little sister of Iran peak, which is called Mt Fuji (Fujiyama or Fujisan 3776 m) Japan's highest mountain. Fuji is similar and almost twin sister of Iranian summit! Due to this similarity, some people are confused and not able to distinguish between the two volcanoes.

Mount Damavand is the highest elevation about 5628m a. l. s. in Iran. It is an inactive volcanic mountain which was activated in Quaternary Period. It has numerous thermal springs. Damavand Summit, which is a symbol of Iranian pride, is knuckling under the harms inflicted on its environment, head of the Environment Committee of Clean Damavand Supporters Taskforce told Fars news agency. Hossein Abiri regretted that Damavand is crammed with piles of garbage and batteries discarded by
tourists. “The batteries include radioactive substances and are therefore highly pollutant. Unfortunately, the garbage, particularly the non-decomposable waste, is incinerated at the site, causing even more pollution,“ he exclaimed. In another development, Abiri said that the Lar Plains, which used to be one of the most beautiful national terrains, have been exposed to swarms of tourists picking the wild poppies. “Presently, the remains of Lar wild poppies are being protected by the two NGOs, Green Front and Iranian Mountaineers Association.“

He proposed that the region be declared as a protected area to prevent further destruction. Abiri said, “We proposed to former president Khatami in two letters that July 4th--a day which according to old fables, Iranian boundaries were set by the mythical character, Arash Kamangir’s arrow from Damavand Mount, be designated as Damavand Day. Unfortunately, that did not happen.“He then made the same appeal to the new chief executive, new president . Stating that the other national summits were not in a better condition than Damavand, he proposed, “Mountain climbers in Himalaya are charged a certain amount for carrying every bottle or can of drink. The money will be refunded once they return the bottles; otherwise, it would be given to workers who clean the environment. Adopting the same measure can help preserve Iranian mountains as well.“ Iran Daily Thu, Aug 11, 2005

Volcano Damavand is located in Alborz Mountain Range Iran, this 5671 huge young dormant volcano was formed during the Holocene geological time and its last eruption goes back to about 10,000 years ago. This composite cone stratovolcano has a big crater which its diameter is about 200 meters from south to north and approx 400 meters from east to west, it encircle the peak with a ring of yellow rocks of nearly pure sulfur. The bowl shaped crater is about 30m deep and has a small permanent glacier which is usually covered by snow and ice.

Warning
Just near the summit and under the crateat, at the junction where south and east climbing routes join together, a big new vent was formed in 2007, which still exhaling a great amount of smoke and hot sulfuric gases and steam with pestiferous smell, this makes some problem for climbing. Without adequate equipment such as oxygen mask, it is quite dangerous to go close to this vent, because if the wind changes its direction, you could get caught in the sulfuric poison gas.

Mt. Damavand in mid Alborz Mountains in northern Iran has a small glacier at its crater, this summit glacier is accumulated with ice and snow during the winter and it is usually frozen during the whole year, but in the peak of a hot summer it could melt to water and form a small pool or lake.

The pool diameter is about 20 to 40 meters and its height is about 5,650 meters above sea which is the highest in Middle East and ranked No 10 in the World Highest Lake Ranking.

Because of freezing temperature at the peak, there is little chance to see some water in this pool and it is an icy pool rather than a water lake, it disappears totally and freezes solid down to the bottom during the cold seasons.

If you ascend the mountain in the summer, it is a good idea to visit this natural phenomenon, remember the water in this pool is not drinking water. Due to its small size, this pool cannot qualify as a true permanent lake also because it disappears during the winter and cold season, it is just a small frozen pool.

There are few frozen dead animals at the top of Mount Damavand similar to Egyptian mummies, but without any bandages! These dead bodys have been there for a long time, perhaps for about 20 or 30 years. There is no clear idea about the cause of their dead, maybe they died becuse of some disease, sulphur gas, hunger or frozen to dead due to cold weather. The bodies belongs to animals such as sheep, gazelle, dog and wolf. Because of very cold and freezing weather at the summit and also sulphur gas at the top, these bodies will remain for many years more.

A brief introduction
Damavand 5671m is a dormant volcano located in Iran which provides breathtaking views for and mountaineering and hiking & trekking in spring and summer seasons, it is popular and well-traveled by hikers, it attract many climbers and tourists each year, in a clear visibility it can be seen as far as 250 km away, it has a crater about 200 meters in diameter, this stratovolcano looks like Mt Fujiyama (Mt Fuji ) in Japan.

Damavand Ranking
It is the highest in Persian Plateau, the highest peak in Middle East, the highest volcano in Asia, the second highest volcano in the northern hemisphere and ranked 12th in the world by the prominence factor.

Mountaineering
Damavand difficulty and the climbing grade is similar to Mount Kilimanjaro 5892 m and Mount Everest Base Camp 5380.
Volcano Damawand is well-known for its moderate slops, climbing it is not technically difficult, but physically a moderate to tough challenge in summer but very difficult in winter.

Summer is the best climbing season for this mount which climate is good and footpaths are free of snow. Those who want to try this volcano for the first time and have an ordinary climbing skills are advised to try this mount in summer only, the best ascending side is south route.

The best months for mountaineering are June, July and August are, when there is a small amount of snow, the recommended starting days are Saturday to Monday ( Iranian midweeks). Note in Iran weekend are Thursday and Friday.

Best Start point for the south and east route is Camp1 Polour, in Polour village on the south face of the mountain, Polour Hut is a comfortable complex sport center and a cosey place for accommodation and acclimatization and in the area, if you intend to use this hut, it is recommended to book your room in advance in the summer season.

Shadow
During the sunrise Damavand Volcano has a pretty shadow, you need a good timing and a clear sunny day in order to witness this nice shadow and take some good-looking photos, in early morning hours there is a good chance to see the volcano free of clouds. If you want to get best pleasure of your photography and take few nice shot of DAMAVAND shadow, it is a good idea to kick off at about 4.30 am from Camp3 Bargah Sevom towards the top in a summer climb, the sunrise is between 6 and 7 am and you may have the chance to take your photos at about 7 am.

Mt Damavand IceFall
Damavand Mountain has an icefall (or icy fall) approx 15 meters tall called "Abshar Yakhi" on its south face, it is located at altitude of 5100 meters on the south climbing route, it is visible on the right hand side when ascending to the summit, it is the highest icefall in the Middle East, we are not sure about its rank in the world ?!

A small glacier above is the main source of water to form and maintain it almost as a permanent icefall, it may only collapse in a very hot summer. The wonder and the beauty of this icy fall attracts even tired climbers to change their way for a short visit to this interesting phenomenon.

Lar Lake
Lar Dam Lake
Lar Lake is formed behind Lar Dam on the west side of Mt Damavand, this artificial lake is one of the main water reservoir which supplys a major part of fresh drinking water to Tehran. Heavy snow and rain fall in the area results in natural fresh water and forms permanent streams, springs and river to this lake. Amirkabir Karaj, Tar and the Latian Lake are the other sourses of water for Tehran.

Due to vicinity of Damavand Mountain and the Caspian Sea, this zone has a pleasant and cool climate which provides breathtaking views and beautiful landscapes for hiking & trekking in spring and summer. This region is also well known in the world for its natural poppy fields which covers a vast area around the lake. It is a famous preserved fishing destination which provides an exclusive red dotted trout fish, fishing is allowed only with the permit for two months every year on even days. It is also a suitable place for water sports such as swimming.

4 Days Shared Tour Itinerary 1-4 August 2010
Damavand South route .

Day 1 - Arrival Day - 1 August 2010
Transfer from Tehran hotel or International Airport (IKA ) to: Camp1 Polour Hut, 2270 m, just rest in the hut for acclimatization, no climbing or hard exercises and no pollution of Tehran weather, over night in Polour Hut.

Day 2 - Starting Day - 2 August 2010
Transfer from Camp1 to Camp2 Base, as far as car can go, and by 4 to 6 hours trekking to Camp3, over night in Camp3 New Hut.

Day 3 - Summit Day - 3 August 2010
Team start climbing at about 5 am towards Summit, and then return back to camp3 and stay the night in New Hut.

Day 4– Return Day - 4 August 2010
We descend down to camp2, drive to camp1 and then to Tehran, tour ends.

This is the best starting point for Mt Damavand south and west route, unlike Reineh camp it is a shortcut to Mt Damavand base camp, this new complex sport center is made by Iran Mountain Federation and it has a hostel which looks like a comfortable hotel located in Polour village, it contains:

Located in Mt Damavand south route you may use:

A - New hut or lodge
New hut in camp3 is the best place for accomedation in the area. It is comfortable and safe in case of bad weather. There are private and shared rooms with bunk beds,
- 4 private rooms
- One big shared saloon with bunk beds
- kitchen and cooking equipments
- No Electricity (only few hours at night)
- No telepnone
- No central heating it is quite cold especially at night
- toilet ( outside)

General Info and Quick Facts Part 1
Damavand Mountain is a dormant volcano located in Alborz Mountain Range Iran. On most days of the year in clear condition the summit can be seen not only from Tehran but also far from 150 kilometers away . it looks like Fujiyama in Japan but much greater . There has been no eruption in historical times and records so it is also regarded as extinct silent volcano. At the summit there is a crater about 150-200 meters across , with a lot of yellow sulfurous rocks and pumice stones. At about 5000 meters there are also some sulfuric gas making a little problem for climbers . Snow covers the crater and upper slopes in winter, spring and autumn . Because of its great height , the view from summit is beautiful, a big panorama of mountains and valley covering many hundred of square kilometers . All around are other peaks of the Alborz range, in the north to the Caspian Sea plain and in the south descending to the deserts of central of iran . It is not only the highest peak in Iran , but also the highest in Middle East and the highest if you travel from Europe eastward to Iran .

Mt Damavand has numerous thermal springs with therapeutic qualities, these minral hot springs are mainly located on the volcano's flanks and at the base , giving evidence of volcanic heat comparatively near the surface of the earth . Although Damavand is believed to be extinct and while no historic eruptions are recorded , hot springs on the flanks and fumaroles (steam vents) in the summit suggest that a hot or cooling magma body is still present beneath the Volcano Damavand. This continuing activity, while minor, sulphorous fumaroles still emit gases at the peak, and hot springs in the valleys testify to a remaining heat source , indicates that Mount Damavand is a dormant rather than an extinct volcano. The most important thermal springs are Ask and Larijan.

Mount Damavand is the highest elevation about 5628m a. l. s. in Iran. It is an inactive volcanic mountain which was activated in Quaternary Period. It has numerous thermal springs. Acclimatization
Mount Damavand ranks alongside Kilimanjaro in terms of toughness, ascent to the summit is technically easy but physically a challenging hike, the main challenge of climbing is acclimatization and the fact that the air gets thinner with less oxygen as you gain altitude, so in order to increases you chance of success and decrease the risk of AMS and enjoy a safe hike to the summit, it is essential to be acclimatized to high altitude or get ready for new climate conditions and environment in Mt Damavand .

How to Acclimatize ?
There are different ways for acclimatization , I recommend this one which we have tested it successfully many times in our tours for foreign clients, and I believe is one of the best for foreign climbers and works good in a short form itinerary.

Day 1 - Arrival Day + Acclimatization
In the first day of itinerary and your arrival day in Iran , to get rid of pollution of Tehran , go by car directly from airport to Camp1 Polour altitude 2270m in Polour village, just rest and sleep the night there for acclimatization, no climbing or hard activity, and no pollution of Tehran weather.This is the best starting point and resting place for climbers who intend to climb Mt Damavand from calsic south route or west route .

Day 2 - Ascend to Camp3 + Acclimatization
In the second day of your itinerary go by car from camp1 to Camp2 - Base , and by 4 to 5 hours slow walk go to Camp3 - Bargah Sevom , rest the night in camp3 for more acclimatization.
Remember that Camp2 - Base camp is not suitable for use in summer, because it is too crowded and too dirty, for acclimatization you better use camp1 or Camp3 only. See also Warning

Day 3 - Summit Day
In the third day, you are almost ready for a safe climb to the summit.

Day4 - Spare Day for Acclimatization ( or Bad Weather )
In case you need more time for acclimatization, in the third day you can ascend to nearby heights and descend to camp3 Bargahe Sevom and stay one more night in camp3 , and go for the summit in forth day.

Usually, these unpleasant effects of lack of oxygen wear off over two to three days, particularly if no further ascent is made. Once the body has acclimatised in this way, further gradual height gain is possible although symptoms may recur at any time. The question "How high, how fast?" has no absolute answer because of individual variation, but it is reasonable for healthy people of any age to travel rapidly to 3500m, though many will develop some degree of AMS after arrival. It is unwise to travel much above 3500m immediately from sea level.
Above 3500m, the speed of further height gain should be gradual and we advise no more than a 300m increase in sleeping altitude per day (with a rest day every third day) and spending at least a week above 3500m before sleeping at 5000m. This does not mean you can’t ascend more than 300m in a day (eg. to cross a pass or attempt a summit), as long as you descend again before sleeping. The highest altitude where man lives permanently is about 5500m (18,000ft) but on mountaineering expeditions or a trek, residence for several weeks around 6000m (20,000ft) is quite possible and at these altitudes one should feel entirely well when acclimatised, being limited only by breathlessness on exertion.

A new camp is under construction in this area and will be ready late summer 2008 .Remember that there is no other camp or shelter from this point upwards in the south route of mount Damavand.

Damavand itself may look more attractive from afar than from close up, but the views on clear days and the experience of climbing damavand with a group of equally minded hikers from around the world are very rewarding.

When to climb Damavand ?
Best climbing season for damavand
June, July and August are the best climbing season for damavand. During these three months, the damavand footpath is usually free of snow, the weather is relatively mild, access by public transportation is easy but the mountain shelters are crowded. Everybody without much hiking experience is strongly advised to tackle the mountain during this climbing season.

When not to climb Damavand!
Off Season
Mountain shelters are open for use in all climbing seasons in Iran. While there is usually little snow on mount damavand , even during summer temperatures at the summit drops to far below zero eg down to -25C at night.Only experienced hikers with a strong urge to avoid the crowd, should consider the Off Season ascent to damavand .From October to around mid May climbing to the Damavand summit is highly perilous due to extreme wind and weather conditions, snow, ice and other risks.

Iranian new year holydays and Weekends
Iranian new year called Nowroz , 21 March to 2 April, is not recommended for damavand climbing , during this time you can not find public transport , and the roads are in the worst possible trafic condition.

How to climb Damavand ? Is it difficult ?
The ascent to the damavand summit does not require any major climbing skills. Only at some points, the terrain is steep and rocky. A few signs along the trail show the hikers the way. However, the main challenge of the climb is the fact that the air gets notably thinner as you gain altitude.

The Crowds
Climbing mount damavand is very popular not only among the Iranians, but also among foreign tourists, who seem to make up less than a fifth of all hikers. The peak season for climbing mount damavand is during the school vacations which last from around 20 June to 23 Sep. The peak of the peak is reached about 6 August, It is recommended to avoid climbing in this period .In order to encounter neither too large nor too small crowds, we suggest you to climb mt damavand on a weekday in the first half of July before the start of the crowd. The downside of a climb in early July is the weather, which tends to be somewhat more unstable than later in the season.

Mount damavand has 16 routes , 4 of these routes ( south north east and west ) are popular, each with a shelter at about 4000m .The north face has an extra shelter at 5000m , the most popular side is the south face, most climber start their ascent to the damavand summit from south route.

South Route
It is easily accessible from Tehran or north of Iran , the short way from Tehran to the Damavand through Haraz main road make southern approach best Trail . This is by far the easiest and the best side, the ascent to the summit is also shorter .

Distance from Polour Complex Camp approx 1 hour by car
This is the most popular base for the climb to the Damavand summit, and the most easily accessible from Polour or Reyneh by car. The last part of the road to this camp is a rough gravel road , the Hraz Road , is a crowded road , which is used by private vehicles during the peak of the summer holidays (specially Iranian weekends Thursday and Friday).

Mount Damavand Camp3 - Bargah Sevom Camp
Altitude 4220 m - 13845 ft
Ascent to damavand summit : 5-7 hours
Descent from Damavand summit : 2- 4 hours
The south Trail leads from the Bargah Sevom Camp to the summit. Lots of footpath shows this trail to the top , and there are separate trails for the ascent and descent.The South Trail meets the East Trail near the summit. Spend one night sleeping in Bargah Sevom and then continue to the summit early on the second day.
A wrong way is to start climbing the mountain during the night from the 3rd camp and hike through the night to reach the summit around sunrise. Obviously, this is a more tiring way of climbing the mountain and brings an increased risk of falling victim to altitude sickness .

Climbing Equipment
In order to enjoy a safe hike to the summit of Mount Damavand, it is crucial to bring the proper equipment. Some of the most important things to bring are listed below:

Proper Shoes
The rocky, steep terrain in some sections and the potential of sudden, strong wind gusts are reasons to bring proper hiking shoes .

Proper Clothes
Bring proper protection against low temperatures and strong winds. It is usually below zero at the summit, and strong winds often make it seem even colder. Bring rain gear, as weather conditions can change very quickly in the mountains. Gloves are recommended both against the coldness and for hiking the steep, rocky passages.

Flashlight
Alothough I do not suggest you hike during nighttime, a flash light is highly recommended in any season and essential outside of the peak season . Most people choose head lamps, as they leave both of your hands free.

Food
Particularly on the trails where there are few mountain huts, it is important to bring enough water and food. Also, it is a good idea to carry down all your garbage although there are garbage bins on mount damavand.

Altitude Sickness
The human body requires some time to adjust to a sudden increase of altitude, otherwise there is a risk of headache, dizziness and nausea. Quite a few people, who climb mount damavand, fall victim to altitude sickness. To avoid altitude sickness, you are advised to tackle the mountain at a slow pace and make frequent breaks. An overnight stay at Bargah Sevom Camp is recommended as opposed to a straight climb to the top. There are no bottles of oxygen, available at mountain hut, you may bring your own as an effective tool in preventing and fighting altitude sickness.
