All foreigners mountaineers who plan to go to Damavand in Iran for hiking trekking, mountaineering, ski touring or snowboarding, from any route and in any season, must obtain a climbing permit from Iran Mountain Climbing Federation in advance. In technical terms trekking to Damavand is not difficult in summer season. But physically it is a difficult trek. The main challenges of the climb are Damavand Weather, sulfur smokes and acclimatization, the air gets thinner with less oxygen as you go higher. To increase the chance of success and lower the risk of AMS and to enjoy a safe trek to this summit it is essential to get accustomed to this new environment.
The best resorts to acclimatize for climbers who want to trek Damavand from south route are Camp 1 Polour Resort at 2250 masl and Camp3 Bargah Sevom New Hut at 4250 masl.

Mount Damavand in Iran is famous for its gentle climbing slopes. Trekking this 5671 meters (18,605 feet) giant volcanic mountain is technically moderate but physically it is a tough challenge and requires a very good physical fitness. The main challenges of the climb are Damavand Weather, acclimatization and the sulfur smokes. The difficulty of Damavand in summer trekking is comparable to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Mount Everest Base Camp. But Damavand Winter Climbing is a quite different story, it is very difficult and may be compared to a 7000 m peak or more.

Damavand First Camp Polour

Damavand First Campsite is called Polour Resort. It is the best starting point for trekking Damavand in Iran either from the classic south route or the west route. Polur complex campsite is a shortcut to the mountain and is an ideal place for accommodation and acclimatization in the area. Polour Resort is a quite suitable mountain hut and is made by Iran Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Federation (also called Mountain Climbing Federation of Iran) and it is administered by the same organization.

Mount Damavand in Winter

Snow covers Damavand in winter and the summit is snow-capped several months a year. But only the upper parts are white in spring and autumn. Ice and hardened-snow remain on Damavand Glaciers on the north face all the year. This volcano is an excellent symmetrical cone with a narrow summit. It looks like Mount Fuji (Fujiyama) in Japan. Damavand  lies about 80 kilometers driving distance north-east of Tehran in the northern Persian plateau. This giant white summit and its beautiful cloud cap are the most fascinating sight of Iran mountains.

Damavand is a Persian (Farsi) name and it is written as "دماوند" in Persian alphabet, but it is written in different spelling in various languages, the most common and correct spellings in English are DAMAVAND and DAMAWAND.

The pronunciation of DamavandIt is pronounced in three syllables, ie Da-Ma-Vand.
1- Da like in dad (father).
